After 27 years—and with more than 2,000 U.S. patents, nearly 4,000 federal trademarks, and a global patent portfolio—Smith & Hopen will move to Trenam Law’s Business Transactions Group effective November 3, 2025, expanding and complementing Trenam’s already substantial trademark, licensing, and IP litigation strengths with full patent services.
- Are there any Transfer Tasks to Complete?
No. Moving our patent practice to Trenam is an administrative update rather than a transfer of your matters. - Is the existing Patent Power of Attorney valid?
Yes. Patent POA is maintained via the firm’s USPTO Customer Number, which carries over with the same registered practitioners. - Do you still have Trademark Power of Attorney?
Yes. All Smith & Hopen trademark attorneys are joining Trenam; your appointments remain valid. - Will fees and costs stay the same?
Yes. Substantially no change is expected. We will continue pre‑project estimating with milestone‑based approvals. - Will everyone keep the same matter assignments?
Yes. The same professionals already familiar with your intellectual property remain assigned, including attorneys, agents, and staff. - What new capabilities do I gain at Trenam?
Trenam adds scale and complementary strengths: full patent services alongside a top trademark practice; board‑certified IP leadership; practitioners with science/engineering degrees; and professionals with a proven record securing thousands of U.S. utility patents for innovators globally.
