On May 19, 2021 Titleist scored another design patent on one of its iron designs. The patent covers the design of Titleist’s 620 CB irons. Titleist describes the irons as having a “classic cavity” that “stay[s] true to everything players have come to trust from this classic model, with distinct refinements that make them better than ever.” Titleist further describes this iron design as having “reduced offset and topline for the ultimate player’s look,” “progressive blade length for optimized play throughout the set,” and “tour-refined sole for improved turf interaction.”

You can see below a comparison of Figures 2 and 3 of the design patent next to the 620 CB irons shown on Titleist’s website.

Clearly, Titleist understood that the 620 CB iron design has both functional and aesthetic value. This design patent protects the aesthetic design. Because Titleist scored another design patent, golfers looking for “the ultimate player’s look” will have to purchase these Titleist irons.

This is another great example of how to use IP rights to gain a competitive advantage over the competition. Thanks to the design patent, Titleist will have 15 years as the exclusive provider of this unique design.
